Biographical / Historical
In the far northern section of Philadelphia, a community known as Bridesburg, a Reformed Church was established under the leadership of Rev. J. G. Neuber in 1861. It was in this church that the first orphanage of the Reformed Church was founded. During the Civil War a German minister by the name of Emanuel Boehringer was laboring as a missionary in Richmond and Norfolk, VA. After receiving no pay for 19 months he requested to come north and do something to relieve and shelter the many children who were made orphans by the war. He became the editor of a German Sunday School paper called Laemmerhirte (shepherd of the Lambs)(ERHS has this periodical)
